It is a pleasure to present an overview of the Department of Developmental Biology and Genetics (DBG) – a vibrant and dynamic academic unit. Our research spans a wide spectrum – from bacterial and human genetics to developmental biology, epigenetics, RNA biology, cancer and stem cell biology, disease biology and therapeutics, aging and longevity. An underlying theme is a focus on molecular-level insights into cellular functions in both normal and pathological contexts.
DBG thrives on a multi-disciplinary approach integrating diverse model organisms (such as Drosophila, Zebrafish and mice), organoid technologies, cutting-edge multi-omics technologies, mathematical modelling and structural biology approaches. The collaborative spirit within the Department, coupled with strong interactions across the Institute and with clinical partners, fosters a stimulating and supportive environment for exchange of ideas, innovation and discovery. The success of our alumni—many of whom have established themselves as leaders in academia and industry worldwide—reflects the strength of our academic environment and mentorship.
Our research and training activities are sustained by several grants funded by national and international agencies enabling us to maintain state-of-the art facilities to pursue ambitious scientific questions. DBG has been supported by the University Grants Commission (UGC)-Special Assistance Programme (since 2002) and the Department of Science and Technology under the ‘Fund for Improvement of S&T Infrastructure in Higher Educational Institutions’ (FIST) programme (since 2002). The department is also recognized by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) as an Advanced Center for Cellular and Molecular Reproduction (since 2001). In addition, core support is provided by the Indian Institute of Science. Faculty members further strengthen the department’s research portfolio by securing competitive funding from a variety of national and international agencies.
The department actively engages with society via outreach programmes such as Chetana: empowering girls from rural college and STEM for girls. We also host numerous project trainees, facilitate visits by students of several colleges, and conduct workshops for students, teachers, and clinicians.
Committed to nurturing the next generation of scientists, DBG warmly welcome students, postdoctoral fellows, and prospective faculty to be part of this exciting journey.
We extend a warm welcome to DBG!
